This includes:\n * Interest income\n * Dividend income\n * When you move money between your own bank accounts.\n\n### When should you not use bank rules?\nWhen you need to record an invoice for the income or expense. In Australia, you need to keep a tax invoice if the amount of the supply is over $82.50 including GST and you want to claim a GST credit.\n\n### How to set up a bank rule in Xero\nIn this example, we are going to setup a bank rule for monthly loan repayments on a ute.\n\n1. In Xero, select **Accounting > Bank Rules**\n2. Select **Spend Money Rules > Create Rules**\n3. Click apply a bank rule\n4. Click any conditions match\n5. In the field column select amount\n6. In the condition column select equals\n7. In the value column enter the amount of the monthly loan repayment (for example 1065.22)\n8.\tSet the contact, Select **To an existing or new contact**\n9.\tEnter the name of the finance company (for example Westpac Finance)\n10. Allocate line items, skip the automatically allocate fixed value line items section\n11. In the **With any remainder, allocate ratios using percent line items**\n12. In the description column enter what the payment is for (for example Repayment of 2025 Toyota Hilux 4x4)\n13. In the account column, enter the loan account for the repayment\n14. In the tax rate column select the correct tax rate (for example BAS excluded)\n15. In the percent column enter 100% to allocate all the payment to the loan repayment\n16.\tSet the reference, select reference \n17.\tAdd rule details, under run this rule, select all bank accounts\n18. Under name the rule, enter a distinctive name (for example 2026 Toyota Hilux)\n19. **Click save**\n \n### FAQ\n**Can I use the same bank rule across different bank and credit cards?**\nYes – click apply to all bank accounts. \n\n**My business receives a regular monthly invoice for rent. Should I use a bank rule?**\nNo, you should not use bank rules for this transaction. You should enter the monthly rent invoice directly into Xero or via Hubdoc. When the payment for the rent appears in your bank feed, Xero will match the invoice.\n\n**My bank rules are not working properly.**\nThere are 3 items to check:\n1. How the statement item imports into Xero. If the payee name has changed or some other key information has changed you will need to update your bank rule.\n2. The transaction amount may have changed due to price increases and you will need to update the bank rule. \n3. Check order of your bank rules. Xero check the conditions of your bank rules in the order they are listed in the bank rules screen. You may need to re-order the bank rules. \n\n",{"data":35},{"attributes":36},{"url":37,"alternativeText":38,"width":39,"height":39,"formats":40,"hash":67,"ext":42},"https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0.png","Xero Bank Rules",1080,{"large":41,"small":49,"medium":55,"thumbnail":61},{"ext":42,"url":43,"hash":44,"mime":45,"name":46,"path":12,"size":47,"width":48,"height":48},".png","https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/large_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0.png","large_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0","image/png","large_Xero Bank Rules.png",98.7,1000,{"ext":42,"url":50,"hash":51,"mime":45,"name":52,"path":12,"size":53,"width":54,"height":54},"https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/small_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0.png","small_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0","small_Xero Bank Rules.png",35.58,500,{"ext":42,"url":56,"hash":57,"mime":45,"name":58,"path":12,"size":59,"width":60,"height":60},"https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/medium_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0.png","medium_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0","medium_Xero Bank Rules.png",64.11,750,{"ext":42,"url":62,"hash":63,"mime":45,"name":64,"path":12,"size":65,"width":66,"height":66},"https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/thumbnail_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0.png","thumbnail_Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0","thumbnail_Xero Bank Rules.png",8.68,156,"Xero_Bank_Rules_39c4d62be0",{"metaTitle":69,"metaViewport":12,"metaRobots":12,"metaDescription":70,"keywords":71,"metaSocial":72},"Xero bank rules","How to use Xero bank rules and what to do if they don't work","xero, bank, rules,",[],"Andrew McVinish","2026-01-29","2026-03-11T05:50:02.924Z",{"data":77},{"footer":78},{"data":79},{"attributes":80},{"FooterDescription":81,"FooterLink":82},"Website created by WeArePF | Liability limited by scheme approved under Professional Standards Legislation",[83,95,108],{"id":84,"Text":85,"Link":86,"Icon":87},"2","hello@lightbeamca.com.au","mailto:hello@lightbeamca.com.au ",{"data":88},{"attributes":89},{"ext":24,"alternativeText":90,"name":91,"url":92,"hash":93,"width":94,"height":94,"formats":12},"Email icon","email-icon.svg","https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/email_icon_ed33ba1343.svg","email_icon_ed33ba1343",29,{"id":96,"Text":97,"Link":98,"Icon":99},"1","1300 530 478","tel:+1300 530 478",{"data":100},{"attributes":101},{"ext":24,"alternativeText":102,"name":103,"url":104,"hash":105,"width":106,"height":107,"formats":12},"Mobile icon","lb-mobile-icon.svg","https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/lb_mobile_icon_775f8426f0.svg","lb_mobile_icon_775f8426f0",18,27,{"id":109,"Text":110,"Link":111,"Icon":112},"3","1st Floor, 73 Oxford Street,\u2028Bulimba QLD 4171","https://maps.app.goo.gl/ToEX39UsKjMDdGjV7",{"data":113},{"attributes":114},{"ext":24,"alternativeText":115,"name":116,"url":117,"hash":118,"width":119,"height":120,"formats":12},"Location icon","lb-location-icon.svg","https://lightbeam.syd1.digitaloceanspaces.com/lb_location_icon_c029d2da74.svg","lb_location_icon_c029d2da74",23,28,{"data":122},{"renderNavigation":123},[124,129],{"id":125,"title":126,"path":127,"items":128},2,"Privacy policy","/privacy-policy",[],{"id":130,"title":131,"path":132,"items":133},3,"Terms of service","/terms-and-conditions",[],{"data":135},{"renderNavigation":136},[137,142,147,152,157],{"id":138,"title":139,"path":140,"items":141},8,"Services for Tradies","/accounting-for-queensland-tradies",[],{"id":143,"title":144,"path":145,"items":146},5,"About","/about",[],{"id":148,"title":149,"path":150,"items":151},6,"How we work","/how-we-work",[],{"id":153,"title":154,"path":155,"items":156},7,"Pricing","/pricing",[],{"id":158,"title":159,"path":160,"items":161},4,"Blog","/blog",[],{"data":163},{"renderNavigation":164},[],{"data":166},{"renderNavigation":167},[168],{"id":169,"title":170,"path":171,"items":172},1,"Get started","/contact",[],{"data":174},{"cookiePopups":175},{"data":176},[],1787571177600]
